  • Architects solve problems and identify solutions. Project Managers implement solutions.

Expecting a Project Manager to manage a project where they solve a problem as well as implement the solution is a frequent cause of project failure. The problem should be solved before being given to a Project Manager to implement. If this is not possible, then the project should be split into separat phases with an end-to-start dependency.

Designers take the solution definition and create a detailed design that can be implemented by the Project Manager.

The biggest difference between an architect and a designer is that the architect can challenge and question the problem when identifying the solution. The designer is given the solution and should concentrate on developing the details of that solution.
